Prevent Cuts and Stitches!

1. Inspect glassware and discard items that are broken/chipped/cracked

2. When washing glassware, use heavy-duty dishwashing gloves and not the thin nitrile gloves commonly used for chemical protection. The following are available from VWR:

Consider using cut-resistant liners such as:

3 . Put broken plastic into sharps or broken glass containers, and only handle trash bags by the top – do not try to compress the bags, or hold them from the bottom.

See this EH&S web site for tools and information for the safe use of chemicals including:

  • Chemical storage according to hazard class**
  • MSDS's
  • Roles and Responsibilities
  • Procurement, Transportation, and Inventory
  • Hazard Identification and Evaluation
  • Hazard Controls
  • Training
  • Exposure Monitoring and Medical Consultation

** also see this good summary of information prepared by Ben Gilbert (MS Word)

All chemicals in a lab must be bar-coded and entered into the Lab’s on-line Chemical Management System (CMS) (Quick Reference Guide).

The CMS database must be updated when a chemical is exhausted or a new chemical is purchased.  For chemicals that are frequently replaced with the same size, the secondary containment can be bar-coded, so that new bar code labels are not needed every time the chemical is replaced.

Contact Vivi Fissekidou, x5610 for bar code labels.

On-line Chemical Management System (CMS)

  • All chemicals must have bar codes and be entered into the CMS on-line database regularly
  • Call the Division Safety Coordinator for questions and bar code labels
  • Bar Coding Compressed Gas Cylinders

Hazardous Waste

Chemical Safety

  • Label ALL Containers with Chem Name and Hazard
  • Do Not Eat or Drink in Lab
  • Separate Flammables, Acids and Caustics
  • Update Chemical Database (include bar code: contact Vivi Fissekidou) within 30 days of change (aquisition or exhaustion)
  • Read MSDS Before Using Chemical

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Lab Coat and Mask/Respirator if Needed
  • Safety Glasses are required in ALL ESD LABS and in Bldg 64 Highbay and Machine Shop. Read our policy and list of resources HERE.(pdf)
  • Gloves Suitable for Job (see website)
