ESD Lab Safety Responsibility
Because ESD labs are used by multiple PIs and project participants, Department Heads designate a Lab-space Lead PI who is responsible and accountable for EH&S issues in their lab-space.
The Lab-space Lead PI (LLPI) knows about the hazards,
work authorizations and
procedures/equipment
safety requirements in the lab, maintains a Lab
Safety Primer with copies of work authorizations and
safety procedures, and communicates w/ other users/PIs in
the lab. The LLPI conducts monthly inspections of their labs,
and lab safety meetings. Click here for
the LLPI checklist of responsibilities. LLPIs must also ensure
that laboratory entrances are properly identified with their
name and contact information. ESD door plaques can be downloaded here.
Feel free to print your own or request a laminated version
from Sherry Seybold.
Any Lab-space user is expected to know who the Lab-space Lead PI is, and to inform/discuss new work and/or change in work-scope with Lab-space Lead PI, supervisor, and Safety Coordinator, obtain appropriate training and know about authorization requirements, know the location of Lab-Safety Primer, and read it.
