The CO2 storage pilot test has the following objectives:
(1) Demonstrate the safety and feasibility of CO2 storage
in saline formations in the vast Central Valley, California;
(2) Demonstrate and test methods for monitoring CO2 storage
projects in California; and
(3) Gain experience with regulatory permitting and
public outreach associated with CO2 storage in
saline formations in California.
The Central Valley of California is estimated to have a storage
capacity between 60 and 500 Mt CO2, representing
a huge sink for CO2. This will be the first test
of the feasibility of CO2 storage in this important
sink.
