Task 1. Pilot tests of CO₂ storage in the San Joaquin Valley, California

The CO₂ storage pilot test has the following objectives:

(1)  Demonstrate the safety and feasibility of CO₂ storage in saline formations in the vast Central Valley, California;
(2)  Demonstrate and test methods for monitoring CO₂ storage projects in California; and
(3)  Gain experience with regulatory permitting and public outreach associated with CO₂ storage in saline formations in California.

The Central Valley of California is estimated to have a storage capacity between 60 and 500 Mt CO₂, representing a huge sink for CO₂. This will be the first test of the feasibility of CO₂ storage in this important sink.
