Biographical Summary

Anh Phuong Tran obtained his M.S. in GIS & Water Resources from Sejong University (South Korea) in 2008, and B.S. in Hydrology from Vietnam National University, Hanoi (Vietnam) in 2005. In 2014, he received his Ph.D. in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering from the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL, Belgium). From February to May 2014, he is a postdoc researcher at the Environmental Science (Earth and Life Science Institute, UCL). Since June 2014, he joined the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) to work as a postdoc fellow at the Geophysics Department, Earth Sciences Division.

At the LBNL, his first research concentrates on using the hydro-geophysical-thermal measurements to quantify soil hydrological and biochemical properties. This research is crucial for better understanding the space-time dynamics of the hydro-biochemical processes, which provides valuable information for sustainable management strategies of water and soil as well as for remediation treatment measures at contaminated sites. His second research focuses on inverse modeling of time-lapse temperature and geophysical data to simulate freezing and thawing processes in the permafrost region from the column to field scale. This helps to improve knowledge on dynamics of the permafrost and active layers, which ultimately contributes to increase the accuracy of climate change prediction, carbon cycling and energy balance in high latitude systems.
