Biographical Summary

I joined LBNL as a Senior Staff Scientist in the Earth Sciences Division in February 2008. Prior to that, I was heading the Department of Plant Biology & Forest Genetics, The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden, where I held the Professor Chair in Molecular Cell Biology from 1999-2008. During 1994-1999, I was Professor in Biochemistry at the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics, Stockholm University.

Research Expertise & Interests

Our research revolves around plant, algal, and cyanobacterial biochemistry and molecular biology. Specific areas of interest are photosynthesis, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and metabolic engineering of plants and cyanobacteria for biofuels and carbon sequestration.

Research Projects

  • CyanoFuels. We design and engineer freshwater and marine cyanobacteria for enhanced carbon uptake and production of high-density liquid biofuels. More ...
  • BioCal. We study carbonate biomineralization in cyanobacteria. More ...
  • FOLIUM. The objective here is to establish tobacco as a platform for foliar productino of advanced hydrocarbon fules. This project is a collaboration with UC Berkeley, the Joint Genome Institute (JGI), and the Kentucky Tobacco Research & Development Center (KTRDC). More ...
  • Source-Sink. We study the regulation of source-sink communication in cereals such as barley, rice and sorghum as a means to enhance carbon uptake for biofuel and food production. More ...
