Earth Sciences Division (ESD) Department of Energy (DOE) Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL)

Bioenergy research as ESD encompasses a wide range of scope, scale and funding sources. Projects include: three ARPA-E projects aimed at developing biological systems for direct conversion of CO2 or CH4 to liquid transportation fuels; two projects funded by the Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI) that exploit microbial communities for enhanced hydrocarbon recovery; ESD Research at the Joint Bioenergy Institute (JBEI) on designing biofuel pathways and exploring microbial diversity for lignocellulosic decsonstruction. These and other bioenergy projcts at ESD are described below.
