Biographical Summary
John manages West Coast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (WESTCARB) projects in California and Arizona. These U.S. Department of Energy/industry collaborative projects involve drilling wells and injecting CO2 into deep saline aquifers, then using geophysical techniques to monitor the movement and stabilization of the CO2 in the earth. His efforts involve coordinating project scientists, industry partners, and technical consultants; working with other geophysicists to demonstrate technologies for monitoring geosequestered CO2; acquiring permits from regulatory agencies; and informing political leaders and the public about geologic storage of CO2 as one of many important technologies for mitigating global warming.
Before returning to the Lab in 2007, John worked at the California Energy Commission in the Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) Program managing research projects focused on developing clean, efficient, electricity generation systems with low CO2 emissions.
A major part of John’s career has involved the exploration for and development of geothermal resources. As an independent consultant he planned and managed geophysical (magnetotelluric [MT]) surveys of geothermal prospects in Indonesia, the Azores, and Japan. One of the Azores surveys discovered a new geothermal system that is being developed for electricity generation. As the General Manager of a 50‑employee MT service company, he advanced data collection and interpretation capabilities for clients exploring for geothermal and oil resources.
