ESD Postdocs and Scientific and Operations staff at a networking/workshop event, October 2011.
Postdoctoral training in the Earth Sciences Division is a vital part of obtaining the appropriate experience to advance to a career as a scientific professional within Berkeley Lab or other academic institutions and in industry. ESD postdocs are a significant component of the scientific community at Berkeley Lab, and the position offers opportunities to undertake scholarly research, interact with career scientists in many areas of expertise, and develop supervisory skills through training students. Other activities that provide excellent experience for career advancement include assisting in organizing scientific meetings and volunteering for committees. In 2009, ESD started to see the postdoc community grow and anticipates a total number of 80 postdoc hires (not including affiliates) by 2012. See all of our current ESD postdoc staff and affiliates by clicking on the "Postdoc Staff Directory" tab below.
More information about postdocs at Berkeley Lab can be found on the Berkeley Lab Postdoc Webpage, which includes the "meet a postdoc" video series, the postdoc climate survey and results, workshops and seminars, and external job postings.
In addition, the following is a list of resources for the postdoc community within ESD and Berkeley Lab.
ES Division Director, Don DePaolo appointed two Advisors for the postdoc community:
The Advisors are available to meet/speak with the postdocs directly and be a "sounding board" or "safe" person to speak to if a postdoc feels they cannot speak with their supervisor or Human Resources, directly. Pulling from their own experience, the Advisors will provide advice and guidance on scientific directions or other topics of interest to the postdocs. The Advisors will also advise the Division Director and Management on issues and ideas to (1) make LBNL/ESD a great place to work, (2) enhance the postdoc work experience, and to (3) provide continuing education and career development opportunities.
ESD is addressing its training and development initiatives by identifying courses, programs, and resources that will assist employees in improving core capabilities, fostering creativity, and mentoring others. Click on the view more link to read these opportunities in greater detail. In addition, listed below are two At-A-Glance documents that outline guidelines for success for Postdoctoral Fellows and guidelines for supervisors of Postdocs with a goal to open up lines of communication, developing goals and expectations.

Junior staff science discussion groups have been organized within a few of ESD's Program Research Areas and Projects and are open to all junior staff members of ESD. The purpose of these groups is to improve communication, as well as provide an opportunity to get to know each other's work with the goal of improving collaborations throughout research areas. Discussion groups meet on a regular basis, are led by a junior staff member, and are open to those who's interest as specific to the research area. The following Research Areas and Project discussion groups are currently active:
To get your staff page created on the ESD website, please email esdwebmaster@lbl.gov with your portrait photo, CV and a short bio (1-2 paragraphs). One of the ESD web team will create your staff page for you and email you when it is ready. Training is also available for those who wish to update the content on their staff page themselves using our web content management system.
The following is a list of fellowships offered at Berkeley Lab. These fellowships are offered every few years depending on availability of funds for a given period of time. Look for Level-1 announcements from the Division Office, Human Resources, or information communicated through TABL. Interested posdoctoral fellows should discuss opportunities with their supervisors or Human Resources before applications are submitted.
Networking with other postdocs is also a critical activity while at Berkeley Lab, and the purpose of this page is to provide the information needed to make that as easy as possible.
LBL and UCB have in place a system to grant UCB Credentials (Cal 1 ID Cards and Calnet Usernames & Passwords) to LBL Postdocs, and Employees who need to utilize UCB resources.
