Welcome to the Environmental Science Program at the ALS

The Advanced Light Source (ALS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is one the U.S. DOE SR laboratories with special experimental capabilities for molecular environmental science. The ALS is unique in that it is an optimized soft x-ray Synchrotron Radiation source yet has world-class performance to energy ranges of 30 keV. This program focuses on enhancing environmental science user support at the ALS, primarily across a suite of ALS Core Environmental Beamlines. The core beamlines provide spatial resolutions from nanometer to multi-centimeter, and have capabilities to support a the type of investigations most needed by the EMSP and NABIR programs of the DOE Environmental Remediation Science Division. This program is designed to assist enviromental researchers in:

• gaining familiarity with the ALS;
• choosing the appropriate beamline to propose to use for their project;
• developing their proposal to request access on the chosen beamline; and
• running samples.
