The Climate Sciences Department was founded in April 2007 and is the newest ESD Department with nearly 40 full-time employees.  Through the Department’s ongoing efforts to contribute strongly toward DOE’s strategic mission and to attract top talent aimed at tightly focused research goals, Berkeley Lab was recognized by DOE in 2011 as one of the National Laboratories having a core competency in Climate Change Science.  The Department’s research capabilities fall primarily into three areas we describe as modeling climate change and climate change solutions; simulating clouds, rain, and the water cycle; and, measuring and modeling the terrestrial carbon cycle.

The current Climate Sciences Department Head is Bill Collins.
