Fundamental & Exploratory Research Program

The Earth Sciences Division (ESD), Fundamental and Exploratory Research Program covers fundamental earth sciences research conducted in support of the Department of Energy’s science mission. This mission includes performing research to develop an understanding of fundamental Earth processes that can be used as a foundation for efficient, effective, and environmentally sound use of energy resources, and provide an improved scientific basis for advanced energy and environmental technologies, and for understanding and mitigating the environmental impacts of energy development and use. The Fundamental & Exploratory Resources Program is currently headed by Donald J. DePaolo.
