The CO2 storage pilot test has the following objectives:

  1. Demonstrate the safety and feasibility of CO2 storage in saline formations in the vast Central Valley, California
  2. Demonstrate and test methods for monitoring CO2 storage projects in California
  3. Gain experience with regulatory permitting and public outreach associated with CO2 storage in saline formations in California.

The Central Valley of California is estimated to have a storage capacity between 60 and 500 Mt CO2, representing a huge sink for CO2. This will be the first test of the feasibility of CO2 storage in this important sink.
