Laboratory testing was conducted to investigate thermal-hydrologic flow processes in fractured volcanic rock. Although the scale of the domain investigated is necessarily reduced compared to field tests, laboratory testing complements the field testing by allowing for greater control of boundary conditions and more detailed characterization of the domain investigated. These advantages can be useful for specific evaluation of thermal-hydrologic processes as compared with field tests that provide a closer representation of repository thermal-hydrologic behavior but are more difficult to interpret in terms of thermal-hydrologic processes.
