SFA Retreat General Information & Goals

GENERAL INFORMATION
The Sustainable Systems SFA hosted its first annual retreat January 12-13 at the Shattuck Hotel, Downtown Berkeley. The retreat consisted of a limited number of oral presentations, two poster sessions, and two breakout sessions. The first day of the retreat was dedicated to oral/poster presentations, which aided in familiarizing all retreat participants with SFA and related/collaborative research and expertise. Equally important, presenters identified opportunities for future research associated with the presentation topic, which motivated  stimulating creative thinking during the subsequent breakout sessions. Two breakout sessions were held the second day, where attendees were asked to think boldly and creatively about the most impactful goals that the SFA is well positioned to meet over the long term, and to chart a path to achieving those goals.

All SFA members attended the retreat as well as many of our collaborators and members of the SFA Scientific Advisory Board.

GOALS FOR THE RETREAT
The goals of the Sustainable Systems SFA retreat were to assess our SFA progress and to think deeply about the long-term (~10 year) scientific goals for the SFA. We have just completed the third year of the Sustainable Systems SFA through tackling three Research Challenges at three different research sites, and will submit a new 5-year scientific plan in early 2013. The time was ripe to take stock of our recent advances and key competencies and to brainstorm about scientific challenges that we are well poised to tackle and that are worthy of a 10 year investment by BER. You are encouraged to view the AGENDA.
