Summer is a popular time to hire and rehire student assistants. Here are a few quick tips so that you know what is needed and what to expect if you plan to hire a student assistant.
Once you notify HR that you are planning to hire a student, we will forward you the information that we need in order to start the process. This process will be different depending on whether you already have a particular student in mind, or if you would like to post a job in order to recruit for qualified candidates.
Here’s an overview of the process:
Please note: The day of the start appointment will be the student’s actual first day of employment; the hire cannot be backdated.
The process is modified in the cases of a foreign national hire, in which case the offer comes from the International Research and Scholars office (IRSO), and may take longer to process as a result of visa processing. In these cases, start dates are estimated and determined by IRSO.
From start to finish, the process of hiring a student assistant can take anywhere from 2 days to a week or so, depending on how quickly HR receives the necessary information and how quickly signatures are obtained (in some instances signatures can be obtained via e-mail in order to speed up the process).
