Email & Internet Access: Email Disk Usage Exceeds 100MB

You will receive an email message if your LBNL email account disk usage is at or above 100MB. You will be charged a fee for every MB of disk usage over 100, with a maximum charge per month of $300. The email sent includes the following information:

Please clean up your LBNL email account. It may be as simple as emptying your trash.

As you know, if your LBNL email account is over 100MB of disk usage, you will be charged a fee. Therefore, I would like you to delete unnecessary emails or file them into your local mail directories. Please also note that the Lab uses "average daily balances" for your email account disk usage for the fee calculations. It may not be sufficient to clean up your email account disk usage at the end of each month. Also, please make sure that you empty your trash regularly to keep your email disk usage to a minimum.

Please note that there seems to be a fault with Netscape messenger.
The problem appears to relate to moving messages from IMAP folders to Local Mail folders through Netscape Messenger. These messages seem to disappear from the IMAP folders and appear in the Local Mail folders. However, when the IMAP folders are viewed through the web interface (accessible through https://www.lbl.gov/cgi-bin/email/muxmail.cgi with LDAP login) the messages which have been moved are still being stored in their original IMAP folder and are simply marked for deletion rather than having been deleted, thus inflating the IMAP disk usage.

The solution to this is to select an IMAP folder in Netscape Messenger, then right-click on that folder and select "Compress Folder." This causes actually deletion of the (invisible) messages marked for deletion.

As you may also know, the Lab is transitioning from Netscape to Mozilla as the Lab standard internet browser and mail client software. If you like, you may want to take this opportunity to migrate to Mozilla.
